If you lift weights you’ve probably been through the battle of dealing with calluses. Then maybe decided to wear lifting gloves to help prevent them, realising they are not comfortable and going back to bare hands and coming to the conclusion that calluses are unavoidable…we’ve just got to deal with them. If they aren’t dealt with you may find they will become a nuisance and get in the way of your training sessions and eventually tear, resulting in complete time off from the weights.
Moisturising is a great way to soften the skin but moisturising alone doesn’t really solve the problem, you need to get rid of the dead skin.
I have tried many pumice stones and files but not really found one that really did the trick, until I discovered the Soap & Glory Utterly Fantastic Foot Buffer. The product is £8.75 and is available from the Soap and Glory website or most Boot’s stores. It has three different file heads. On the main head of the tool it has a rough side and smooth side. Then located in the handle there is a small file which is smooth and actually designed for in between the toes haha. I know it’s designed to be used to scrub your feet but who says it can’t be used for other purposes.
Here are my steps for dealing with calluses using the Soap and Glory foot buffer.
- Please avoid picking calluses…I say this, but i do this myself and find it hard to let them be.
- Soak your hands in a bowl of warm water and few table spoons of olive oil to soften the skin. Leave your hands in to soak for about 10 mins and then remove and pat dry.
- File the calluses with the Soap & Glory Utterly Fantastic Foot Buffer. I would start with the rough side which has small raised areas and then finish with the smooth side or the small smooth file in the handle.
- Give your hands a wash and then moisturise with your favourite hand cream.
After following this procedure for about a week I saw a great improvement in my calluses. One thing to note is please try to avoid being too aggressive when filing the calluses, last thing you want is to file too much off and it becomes painful enough that you can’t do your next workout. No excuses when it comes to training.
Good luck and hope it works as well as it has for me.
